The national security writer W. J. Hennigan has spent many years ringing the alarm about the world’s new nuclear era — the subject of At The Brink, a new series from New York Times Opinion — and the crisis on the horizon. For anyone whose interest was piqued by the origin story of nuclear weapons in “Oppenheimer,” Mr. Hennigan, who happens to be a movie buff, recommends three essential films that illuminate our new nuclear era. An edited transcript of the above audio essay by Mr. Hennigan follows:W.J. For the past quarter-century, an entire generation has come of age without really having to worry about the bomb. This has not something that’s been front of mind.

Phoebe Lett andWhat would it feel like to live through a nuclear attack? The world’s nine nuclear powers are believed to be modernizing their arsenals. Today’s generation of tactical nuclear weapons pose an unpredictable threat. And Vladimir Putin recently threatened the United States and Europe with nuclear retaliation if they become more involved in the war in Ukraine. In this fictionalized audio scenario, Times Opinion imagines the aftermath of one nuclear strike, informed by leading research, hundreds of hours of interviews with experts and accounts from those who have survived nuclear fallout.

It is freezing out, so we’re putting on the mittens and the hat and talking to my colleague Michelle Goldberg, who’s been following the race. I mean, this is going to be the third consecutive election in which Republicans, barring some spectacular turn of events, nominate Donald Trump. And so it’s just all really, really boring. I think it’s already maybe irreversible in the Republican Party. But, at the same time, I just think that — imagine what it will be like to see Donald Trump inaugurated again.

You may have heard recently about The New York Times, Siena poll that has worried Democrats, the one about the battleground states. I’m a pollster focused on understanding young Americans, and there’s a critical part of the electorate that we need to be paying attention to, and that’s Gen Z. But I mean, honestly, to this point, I mean, they haven’t done anything for our parents, our parents’ parents. Young people need to be reminded of those issues. They need to be reminded that because of them, America is a different and, I would argue, a better place.

She comes on Halloween night after they fall asleep, switch it out for either healthier candy or a toy. But I think it’s all part of a larger trend where we don’t let kids have time or space to let their imaginations run wild. And so this lack of unconstructed free time is making kids feel that they don’t have power in their own lives. Maybe a little, but I’m not —[LAUGHS]I don’t want — like, I don’t do it just to be a hater. And where can I find ways that we can do things that give our kids more freedom and pleasure that we’re not stage managing?

Derek Arthur andAmerica has an uneasy relationship with water. More than half of Americans don’t know how to swim or how to swim well. Eleven people in the United States die every day from drowning. In this audio essay, editorial board writer Mara Gay argues that many of these deaths are preventable and proposes a simple solution that could change how the country thinks about swimming. (A full transcript of this audio essay will be available midday on the Times website.)

As world leaders debate how to guarantee Ukraine’s long-term security and possible admittance into NATO, the people of Kyiv are experiencing an uptick in nightly air attacks from Russia. Throughout the war, Ukraine has had to petition the West for weapons and support to stave off losing their country to the invading Russian forces. After a visit to Kyiv demonstrated just how urgently American antimissile technology is needed to protect Ukrainians from mass death, Opinion columnist David French makes the case that it is time for the United States to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to win against Russia, despite the immense risks of challenging Vladimir Putin. Listen to the story in the audio player below.
